Proton technology for cancer treatment: how is the UK progressing?
Proton beam therapy was a term thrust into the mainstream media in 2014 when Ashya King, a six-year-old boy with a brain tumour, was removed from hospital by his parents so that he could be treated abroad using the technique. The Department of Health now estimates that around 1,500 UK patients each year will receive proton beam therapy at UK centres – roughly one per cent of patients who receive any form of conventional radiotherapy1.
