Hereford County Hospital radiotherapy unit planned

A £7.7m radiotherapy unit is to be built at Hereford County Hospital. The unit, which will be designed, built and staffed by Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (GHNHSFT) is due to open in 2013. Patients needing radiotherapy currently travel to Cheltenham General Hospital, 40 miles (64km) from Hereford.

Chief Executive of Wye Valley NHS Trust Martin Woodford said: "This is a landmark development for Herefordshire." The GHNHSFT said the Three Counties Cancer Network, which incorporates all cancer services in Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and South Worcestershire, recognised there was a need for a Hereford unit in 2004.

It also said all patients would travel to Cheltenham for their initial treatment planning session and some would still have to travel to Cheltenham for more specialised treatments.

Work on the unit is due to start later this year.
