OSL Hosts 5th Delta4 UK User Meeting in London
At the end of January delegates from across the UK braved the cold weather to attend the 5th Delta4 User Meeting and Symposium in London. The meeting, held in collaboration with ScandiDos AB, Sweden and University College London Hospitals (UCLH), provided an in-depth overview and demonstration of the new HexaMotion 6D platform for QA of 4D RT including a clinical presentation from Stephaine Lang, Chief Medical Physicist from the University Hospital of Zurich.

OSL wins Cortex contract
Oncology Systems Limited has signed a five year distribution deal with US-based fiducial marker manufacturer Cortex, the people behind the original ACCULOC markers. The contract will see OSL sell the advanced implanted marker line in the UK and Ireland. Across the same territory, OSL also sells CIVCO’s range of fiducial markers and the Gold Anchor fine needle marker from Sweden’s Naslund Medical.

UK’s first TomoTherapy user meeting a huge success

Delegates included individuals from each of the seven hospitals where TomoTherapy Hi-Art and TomoHD treatment machines are installed; Oncology Systems Limited, the UK and Ireland distributors and Accuray Incorporated, the machines’ manufacturers.

UK’s first two TomoHDs installed
Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) has taken delivery of the UK’s first two TomoTherapy TomoHDs. The first installation took place in August in a renovated bunker previously considered too small for modern day treatment machines. The smooth installation ensured the second machine was in situ as planned, just three weekends later.

OSL awards first International Scholarship
Oncology Systems Limited (OSL) has created an international scholarship and awarded it to Japhet Karani Mbaya, a radiographer at Cancer Care Kenya (CCK), based at the M.P. Shah Hospital, Nairobi. The centre is the first in East and Central Africa offering linear accelerator based radiotherapy for the treatment of cancer. Cancer patients across the West Midlands and Wales will soon have access to two of the world’s most advanced radiotherapy treatment machines. The state of the art TomoTherapy® TomoHD™ treatment systems, to be installed at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, will be the first in the UK and Europe’s first dual installation of TomoHDs. The machines are being provided by Shropshire-based Oncology Systems Limited (OSL), after money was raised in an on-going capital appeal by the hospital’s official charity and funds provided by the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

Rapid radiotherapy running at Guy's & St Thomas'
The first NHS TomoTherapy treatment machine in London is up and running less than two months after being installed, treating over 30 people a day at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. Year of Radiotherapy - Radiotherapy Could Save Thousands of Lives
2011 is the Year of Radiotherapy, an initiative to raise awareness of radiotherapy as a cost effective, cutting edge treatment that can help cure cancer. According to figures published by Cancer Research UK, only 1 in 10 people know that radiotherapy helps cure 40 per cent of cancer patients. A report from the national charity estimates that only 38 per cent of cancer patients in England are getting radiotherapy, although research shows that up to 50 per cent might benefit.
