IORT listed in Top 10 Medical Innovations for 2015

Posted on Oct 30, 2014

Cleveland Clinic, one of America’s top 4 hospitals*, today published its annual list of Top 10 Medical Innovations that are likely to have a major impact on improving patient care in 2015.

Included in the Top 10 is single-dose intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) for early-stage breast cancer. IORT delivers a dose of radiotherapy within the tumour bed after surgery and protects surrounding normal tissues. This ‘one-shot’ treatment eliminates the need for repeated visits to hospital for radiotherapy in the following weeks and could help drastically improve the quality of life for the patient.

The Medical Innovations list was carefully compiled by a panel of 110 Cleveland Clinic physicians and scientists. To receive consideration, nominated technologies must (a) have significant clinical impact and patient benefit in comparison to current practices, (b) have a high probability of commercial success, (c) be available on the market in 2015, and (d) have significant human interest in its application or benefits.
