TomoTherapy Clinical Cases
Highly conformal treatments as seen in TomoTherapy Hi-Art® are achieved not only by the physical technological features described earlier, but also due to Hi-Art's integrated treatment planning system. From radical to palliative, small lesions to large region and total body irradiation, Hi-Art® performs inverse treatment planning calculations in minutes. It is often not realised that plans can be as simple as single or parallel opposed type treatments, with the option to fully or partially bock structures that are dose limiting. The system does not use shielding blocks, but instead MLCs automatically open/close over the structures, so that no radiation is delivered to that organ. This is possible due to the extremely low level of radiation able to transmit through Hi-Art's binary MLCs. The resulting plans will however be superior to conventional parallel opposed, with reduced sparing of normal tissues. No Electrons....?It is often said that with only a 6Mv x-ray beam, that TomoTherapy Hi-Art® cannot treat superficial lesions as treated by megavoltage electrons. Using its rotational technique Hi-Art® can deliver a superior treatment plan where lesions are on, or just under the surface, and excels for large, complex shaped superficial lesions, as often found in the chest wall or scalp. Treatment of a scalp lesion, whilst sparing brain, eyes, optic nerves.
