Future full of hope for Redcar 'miracle baby' brain tumour mum

Posted on Jan 04, 2012

A MUM whose baby saved her life by alerting her to a potentially deadly brain tumour is celebrating positive hospital test results. Mel became one of the first patients to undergo Tomotherapy treatment at James Cook, which targets tumours with pinpoint accuracy. She still had to undergo radiotherapy, which she was relieved to finish in September last year.

Mel Hennessy, from Redcar, received her best Christmas present more than one week early, when doctors at Middlesbrough’s James Cook University Hospital said her brain tumour had not grown.

As reported previously, Mel, 40, conceived baby Daisy naturally after eight years of failed IVF attempts.

Daisy turned out to be a miracle in more ways than one, when extraordinary headache and fatigue symptoms during and immediately after Mel’s pregnancy alerted doctors to a non-cancerous, but still life-threatening, brain tumour.

Now consultants have told her the tumour has not progressed - and there is still a chance it will shrink.

Mel said: “They said everything’s stable.

“They’ve moved me down to five-monthly scans rather than four-monthly scans.

“The consultants said, ‘we can’t believe how well you look,’ but the last time they saw me, I was going through radiotherapy and looked so poorly.”

Mel feared the tumour could still grow, but doctors say this is “not necessarily the case”. Mel said: “They said it could still start to shrink. That was good to hear.”

Mel was determined to enjoy the festive season with husband Wayne, 43, Daisy, two, and the rest of the family following two previous Christmases where she was extremely poorly. Mel, who still suffers bad headaches and fatigue at times, said: “I was so excited for Christmas and have made sure it’s been a good one and that I made the most of it.

“I would love them to tell me it’s shrunk, but as Wayne always says, at least it hasn’t grown.”
